The Mental Fatigue of the Digital Generation
Living in the digital age has exposed the human brain to an unprecedented volume of information. Social media platforms, messaging apps, and short-form content constantly bombard the mind with rapid and numerous stimuli. Psychologists refer to this condition as “cognitive fatigue”—a state in which the brain gradually loses its ability to concentrate deeply and process information effectively.
Research suggests that excessive use of digital media can contribute to reduced attention span, sleep disturbances, anxiety, and feelings of mental exhaustion. Constant exposure to notifications can also disrupt the brain’s attention system, conditioning individuals to rely on short bursts of focus rather than sustained concentration.
From a psychological perspective, the human brain is designed to require periods of mental rest and cognitive silence. When people spend long hours exposed to continuous streams of information, the mind loses the opportunity to recover and restore its psychological energy. This issue is particularly common among adolescents and young adults.
